The Study of the Scale through Space. Teaching Innovation Experience among Architecture Schools: Malaga, Seville and Palermo
The educational innovation project object of this communication focuses on the scale
problems that arise in the projects of territorial planning carried out in architecture schools, but also
in the loss of the scale concept related to thought and drawing. The project involved collaboration
among the Schools of Architecture of Malaga, Palermo and Seville with the aim of carrying out a
practical exercise among the students of two subjects that, working on different scales, addressed
similar concepts. In particular, following an PBL methodology based on collaborative projects, the
planning of the N-340 road in the city of Nerja (Málaga) was carried out. Firstly, the territorial scale
is addressed in the subject of Urbanism IV at the School of Architecture of Malaga, proposing the
continuity of its development at the scale of landscape design in another place and with other
designers of the course of Landscape Laboratory at the School of Architecture of Palermo. Besides,
having verified that the academic results have been -in general terms- more satisfactory, the project
has allowed consolidating the academic relationship between the three schools, which has
translated into the development of complementary training actions
Heritage and city. Mass housing neighbourhoods in medium-sized coastal cities: A comparative analysis among Andalusia, Portugal and the Netherlands
The research presents the basis to articulate the assessment and preservation of public housing complexes, taking as an object of study the medium-sized cities of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Setúbal and Lelystad.
These complexes appear due to the generalised housing deficit –by the transfer of
population from rural to urban areas– which characterised European cities mainly during the 20th century. This period was a time of large growth of cities and, therefore, one
of greater architectural and urban production in recent urban history. However, these
are assets that, in most cases, lack general heritage recognition, both by specialists
and non-specialists and, consequently, do not have comparable preservation levels to
other residential types in large cities.
To address this study, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Setúbal and Lelystad are contextualised within the set of medium-sized cities of the Andalusian, Portuguese and Dutch
coast, to which they belong. These cities were also receivers of these migratory processes due to their strategic location within the territorial structure of their region.
The research seeks to make a sequential approach that addresses, from the general
–the construction of the conceptual, theoretical and legislative frame that conditioned
the construction of these urban complexes in Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands– to
the particular, the analysis of each social housing complexes features and their resulting in the current case studies’ urban shape.
The study concludes with an approach to the evaluation of the degree of recognition
and legal protection of these groups in a comparative analysis among these three contexts. From this approach, and together with the singularities of the cases analysed,
there will be gathered the main criteria on which to base their assessment and propose
a specific protection instrument.

Public Relations of Cal Poly Avocado Rootstock Trial
Avocados have been one of California’s specialty crops for quite some time now. The industry has been motivating growers to implement the best management practices to ensure stable and increased production as much as they possibly can. California is the leading state in the country for avocado production. In 2019, California alone produced 109 tons of avocados (US Department of Agriculture, 2020). Unfortunately, root rot has made it a challenge to do so.
Root rot is a disease derived from the Phytophthora cinnamomi pathogen. This is an issue for avocado production worldwide. In efforts to find a method of decreasing the probability of root rot affecting the avocados, Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) is conducting an avocado rootstock trial run by the Horticultural and Crop Science (HCS) Department. At Radio Tower on campus, several trees have already been infected with the disease. The plan is to rip the infected trees out and install rootstock from different growers to evaluate which are most resistant.
The author’s role in the project is creating the handouts and an article with information explaining the trial. If faculty or staff were to be asked or addressed about avocado trees being ripped out or the trial, they can refer to the material the author has developed. Materials developed will be used to educate the public about Cal Poly’s research and actions in the avocado grove
Opportunism as a good practice for the regeneration of obsolete neighborhoods: a methodological approach to urban reality
This article is part of a series of works that are intended to explore alternatives to the model of urban
sprawl that is characteristic of the second half of the twentieth century. In response to the unsustainable
use of land, it starts from a zero-growth assumption that is based on the recovery of inherited housing
stock, enhancing and completing the existing in response to the challenges of today's society.
This hypothesis is based on the demographic and economic potential that many neighbourhoods of socalled first urban periphery have1
. This has been defined as the area of urban expansion that was built to
the urgent quantitative needs of homes existing in Europe at the end of the mid-century wars due to
massive migration from the countryside to cities2
.
It should be understood that these areas have been in a strategic position between historic city centres and
the new developments that have emerged in the real estate boom3
. This makes them appear as areas of
opportunity in the move towards sustainable city models departing from approaches that seek to
“optimize, preserve or increase the value of all the existing urban capital (social, urbanism, built heritage,
etc.), in contrast to other ways of intervention which, inside this urban capital, only prioritizes and
preserves the value of the land”4
.
Despite taking the precepts of the modern city compiled in the Charter of Athens (1933) – the basis of the
western urban theory – they can be recognized as areas that have grown without an overall view,
"urbanized areas where the construction of town is absent"5
. In this sense, their development has led to
spontaneous processes through which the inhabitants of these neighbourhoods have modified the original
morphology using natural processes to adapt the generic typologies to the specific modes of life and the
particular conditions of their own place. Therefore, this article recognizes these processes within the
concept of urban opportunism.
Characterized by spontaneity and therefore lacking of regulation, these processes have historically been
valued by experts and other urban agents as anomalous situations by “claiming that have associated
negative effects on the habitability of the built environment”
6
. However, we wonder about the extent to
which this fact can be used as a useful tool to address the plurality and the instability that characterizes
Bauman’s liquid modern society7
.
Before analysing an example in the Andalusian context, the article reflects the experience of the urban
model of the city of Tokyo as a reference for these spontaneous processes of city construction.
Subsequently, it picks a prospective methodology for a specific study case that is based on the recognition
of the concept of opportunism as good practice to regenerate obsolete neighbourhoods
Fortalezas y rendimiento académico
Treball Final de Grau en Psicologia. Codi: PS1048.
In recent times, the psychological approach has been addressed, for the most part, from a Positive Psychology perspective (Vázquez, 2006). Amongst other character strengths, Love of Learning, Zest (vitality), Perseverance and Self-Regulation provide positive emotions which improve the performance of individuals regarding most of their daily tasks.
The constant search for a better and high quality university teaching promotes research which favors such goals and is oriented towards them. The aim of this work is to identify how certain character strengths determine the academic achievements of first year Psychology students in a specifically challenging subject: Data Analysis, also known as Statistics.
More specifically, this research tries to establish the influence Emotional Intelligence and Perseverance have on the academic performance of students who take this course at the University Jaume I (UJI). The sample of 122 students, both males and females, answered an adapted version of the VIA Classification of Character Strengths and Virtues questionnaire. Secondly, we measure the degree in which these two character strengths influenced, or not, the academic results obtained at the end of the school year. Finally, we concluded the interaction between Perseverance and Emotional Intelligence significantly explains the improvement of the academic performance in students
Advanced tracking and image registration techniques for intraoperative radiation therapy
Mención Internacional en el título de doctorIntraoperative electron radiation therapy (IOERT) is a technique used to
deliver radiation to the surgically opened tumor bed without irradiating healthy
tissue. Treatment planning systems and mobile linear accelerators enable
clinicians to optimize the procedure, minimize stress in the operating room (OR)
and avoid transferring the patient to a dedicated radiation room. However,
placement of the radiation collimator over the tumor bed requires a validation
methodology to ensure correct delivery of the dose prescribed in the treatment
planning system. In this dissertation, we address three well-known limitations of
IOERT: applicator positioning over the tumor bed, docking of the mobile linear
accelerator gantry with the applicator and validation of the dose delivery
prescribed. This thesis demonstrates that these limitations can be overcome by
positioning the applicator appropriately with respect to the patient’s anatomy.
The main objective of the study was to assess technological and procedural
alternatives for improvement of IOERT performance and resolution of
problems of uncertainty. Image-to-world registration, multicamera optical
trackers, multimodal imaging techniques and mobile linear accelerator docking
are addressed in the context of IOERT.
IOERT is carried out by a multidisciplinary team in a highly complex
environment that has special tracking needs owing to the characteristics of its
working volume (i.e., large and prone to occlusions), in addition to the requisites
of accuracy. The first part of this dissertation presents the validation of a
commercial multicamera optical tracker in terms of accuracy, sensitivity to
miscalibration, camera occlusions and detection of tools using a feasible surgical
setup. It also proposes an automatic miscalibration detection protocol that
satisfies the IOERT requirements of automaticity and speed. We show that the
multicamera tracker is suitable for IOERT navigation and demonstrate the
feasibility of the miscalibration detection protocol in clinical setups.
Image-to-world registration is one of the main issues during image-guided
applications where the field of interest and/or the number of possible
anatomical localizations is large, such as IOERT. In the second part of this
dissertation, a registration algorithm for image-guided surgery based on lineshaped
fiducials (line-based registration) is proposed and validated. Line-based registration decreases acquisition time during surgery and enables better
registration accuracy than other published algorithms.
In the third part of this dissertation, we integrate a commercial low-cost
ultrasound transducer and a cone beam CT C-arm with an optical tracker for
image-guided interventions to enable surgical navigation and explore image based
registration techniques for both modalities.
In the fourth part of the dissertation, a navigation system based on optical
tracking for the docking of the mobile linear accelerator to the radiation
applicator is assessed. This system improves safety and reduces procedure time.
The system tracks the prescribed collimator location to solve the movements
that the linear accelerator should perform to reach the docking position and
warns the user about potentially unachievable arrangements before the actual
procedure. A software application was implemented to use this system in the
OR, where it was also evaluated to assess the improvement in docking speed.
Finally, in the last part of the dissertation, we present and assess the
installation setup for a navigation system in a dedicated IOERT OR, determine
the steps necessary for the IOERT process, identify workflow limitations and
evaluate the feasibility of the integration of the system in a real OR. The
navigation system safeguards the sterile conditions of the OR, clears the space
available for surgeons and is suitable for any similar dedicated IOERT OR.La Radioterapia Intraoperatoria por electrones (RIO) consiste en la
